Class Objectives: Simply put, to create and publish the RHS Yearbook. Students will be required to do anything and everything to complete this task. THIS IS AND WILL BE THE MOST DEMANDING COURSE THAT YOU WILL TAKE ON CAMPUS! THIS IS NOT A “FUN CLASS” THAT YOU WILL SPEND TALKING AND SOCIALIZING! Spend your time in class wisely. The more you work in class, the less you will need to work at home, on weekends, and during holidays. That being said, you can expect to spend time at home, on weekends, after school, and during holidays completing your yearbook assignments. DO NOT WASTE TIME IN CLASS BY TALKING AND DOING NOTHING! You will be responsible for EVERYTHING on each of the spreads that you are assigned. That means, photography, interviews, write-ups, stories, and lay-out work to apply these elements to the spread. If you are unable to attend an event, to photograph, or interview, etc. you must re-schedule and or find a replacement for yourself to do so. We will be utilizing additional electronic platforms such as instagram for the entire year. If you are unable to do so, speak to me privately, as there are options.
LATE WORK/ASSIGNMENTS: THE YEARBOOK CAN NEVER BE LATE THEREFORE, NOTHING WILL BE ACCEPTED LATE. NOTHING WILL BE ALLOWED TO BE TURNED IN LATE FOR A REDUCED GRADE. ALL ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE COMPLETED ON OR BEFORE ORIGINAL DUE DATES. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.
Students will:
- Be required to attend the events associated to their spreads.
- Create every element that is needed to complete their spread(s) of the Yearbook.
- Need not procrastinate in completing their spread(s), as time is of the essence.
- Help continue the Yearbook’s theme by aligning their efforts to correspond with the entire book.
- Interview, photograph, and create all text on each of their spreads.
- Work efficiently during class, and dedicated to continue that work over weekends, after school, and holidays, in order to meet deadlines and complete the Yearbook.
- STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO SPELL CHECK THEIR SPREADS!
- STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO NAME ALL PEOPLE IN PHOTOS ON THEIR SPREADS.
- STUDENTS SHOULD PLAN TO ATTEND MOST, IF NOT ALL OF THE SCHEDULED EVENTS ASSOCIATED TO THEIR SPREADS. DO NOT ATTEND THE LAST GAME, EXPECTING TO GET ALL THAT YOU NEED.
- Participate with the RHS Jolly Roger and submit articles for its electronic publication. (you will write at least two(2) articles per semester. These can, and should be, associated to your responsible category within the yearbook. THERE ARE PLENTY OF OTHER ACTIVITIES DURING THE SEMESTER THAT ONE COULD REPORT ON, IF ONE DOES NOT HAVE A SPORT THAT SEMESTER. IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO CREATE THE ARTICLE, CREATE IT ON A GOOGLE DOC, SHARE THAT DOC WITH MR. PHILLIPS, AND UPLOAD THAT ARTICLE TO THE JOLLY ROGER WEBSITE PRIOR TO THE LAST DAY OF THE SEMESTER. DUE DATES FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT WILL BE POSTED AT A LATER DATE. You will submit article ideas, by way of “Beats” during our weekly staff meeting, where we will discuss, and decide on article topics.
- Treat all others in this class as a team member. If you see someone in need, help out.
- Utilize instagram, and post, to convey your understanding of Photography and or Journalism. Assignments and their due dates will follow.
- Students will be responsible for “BEATS, for both yearbook, and the Jolly Roger, on a regular basis, where we, as a staff, will meet to discuss said beats, and determine the beats that go to “Print.”
- Staff members must have a(if not 2) dedicated SD card for the year. Details TBA
Class Rules:
- Be in your seat, with materials out and ready to begin before the bell rings.
- No food or drinks in the classroom. Water bottles with a screw-on lid permitted.
- Keep personal belongings (hair brushes, makeup, etc.) in your bag.
- Use appropriate and academic language.
- NO CELL PHONE USE, UNLESS OTHERWISE PERMITTED.
- NO TALKING, UNLESS YOU ARE THE SPEAKER.
- YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE CLASS, ROAM AROUND CAMPUS AIMLESSLY. THERE MUST BE A PURPOSE OF WORKING AT TIMES.
- Friends are not allowed to “Hang-out” in Yearbook while we are working.
- Don’t ask to “GO OVER THERE” “TALK TO MRS…” “RUN TO THE LIBRARY.”
- Technology: This class will be engaged in a “paperless” curriculum throughout the school year. This means that we will utilize computers the entire year, or as much as possible. Students will also be required to utilize their google accounts and work via this platform to interact with the classroom and communicate with the instructor by using calendar, email, and all other google apps, as well as other platforms. We will also incorporate apps, and gaming into our curriculum. Students will act appropriately at all times or they will be subject to discipline and the loss of their technology privileges. This is a paperless classroom and will be treated as such most of the time. “Paperless” means that most of your assignments, and or any of the descriptions of assignments will be conveyed via an electronic doc. We use google docs primarily, as well as other platforms. You will be assigned a chromebook and will be responsible for its well being. You will retrieve it at the beginning of each class period and put it away at the end. If you do not treat it well (put it away correctly, abuse it, etc.) you will be given one warning. On your second offense you may be sent to a learning director and or denied the use of chromebooks for a period of time.
- Students will participate with certain assignments via instagram. This is the easiest means to complete these particular assignments however, if you are unable to utilize instagram, see me to discuss options.
- THE BELL DOES NOT EXCUSE YOU, MR. P. DOES!
Requirements for Success:
The successful student will be punctual; have assignments accurately completed; participate in classroom discussions and work; will receive passing grades on all assignments both in and out of the classroom; speak with the teacher or fellow student for missing assignments due to absences. If and when students are absent, it is their responsibility to approach the instructor to receive the missing assignment(s), that are due 24 hours after they return to class. You will be responsible in completing your work, even in your absence.
Grading Policies:
Grades will be determined by the accumulation of points for completing this yearbook (both in school and after, during holidays, weekends, and at home), homework assignments, class work, exams, essays, and quizzes, participation and projects. These will be in the form of instagram, class discussions, essay responses, photojournalism, journalism, The Jolly Roger, Yearbook assignments, Yearbook deadlines, Yearbook spreads, and your attendance of your designated events and photos taken at such events. You are responsible for everything on your spreads of the yearbook, the more someone else works on your spread(s), the more your grade decreases. Please view PowerSchool for current grades. Many assignments will take longer to grade, therefore do not expect all grades to have a quick turn-around. To protect the privacy of all students, grades will not be discussed during class. Mr. Phillips is available upon request.
The grades for the class are as follows:
- Classwork 35 % A=90-100%
- Homework 15 % B= 80-89%
- Project 30 % C=70-79%
- Quiz 10 % D=60-69%
- Test 10% F=00-59%
Daily Procedures:
A normal day will consist of students arriving to class on time, with all materials, getting their chromebooks and working with their groups, if needed, to continue developing the yearbook. The overall outcome is the publication of the Yearbook, and every effort should be focused with that in mind. The more you work in class, the less time you will need to work at home and or after regular school hours.
Students will need:
A Memory card(SD). THIS IS A MUST! Students will need to supply their own(NOT OPTIONAL). Get details from Mr. P before you purchase.
A single subject notebook, for interviews, notes, etc.
Students, I truly want you to be successful in this course therefore, I am available at all times via email. I check this most often. I can be reached after hours and over the weekends. I would rather you ask me that “small” or “not important” question on Saturday than have you wait until Monday and potentially not complete your work as needed. So please, please feel free to contact me via email, at any time of the day and week.
Classroom Procedures: (The following policies may not necessarily be held by Mr. Phillips)
Reedley High School has agreed to adhere to and support the following procedures for our classrooms:

- Out-of-Class Pass—for reasons other than restroom needs, teachers will use the standard out-of-classroom pass on a need-by-need basis.
- Supplies—students are to carry daily a notebook, two pencils, two pens, two highlighters, post-its
- Daily assignments are posted on the front board and change daily.
